William III
William rides in Roman costume at the centre of the square's gardens. Beneath the horse's hoof is a small molehill — the mole whose burrow tripped the king's horse Sorrel in 1702, leading to the fall that killed him. Jacobites toasted 'the little gentleman in black velvet' ever after.
